Despite playing its games roughly 40 miles from home, Waldo County had two tough “home” games July 29-30 in the state Little League 10- and 11-year-old baseball all-star tournament.

Waldo County, the host of the event as the District 2 champions by virtue of the tourney being held in Waldoboro, mustered only one run in two games over the recent two days and was eliminated from the state tournament.

The locals fell 11-1 in four innings to District 4 Saco July 30 after dropping a 10-0 decision to District 6 Westbrook July 29.

Ellsworth (District 1) was eliminated as well, along with Waldo County on July 30.

The first three days of the tournament, which began July 28, were pool play for the six participating teams, with the top four teams slated to move on to the semifinals on Tuesday, July 31.

Holbrook (District 3), Saco (District 4), Augusta (District 5) and Westbrook (District 6) all advanced to the semifinals, with Augusta and Saco squaring off at 3 p.m., followed by Westbrook and Holbrook at 5 p.m.

The winners from Tuesday’s games will face off in the championship game slated for Wednesday, Aug. 1 at 3 p.m on Sukeforth Field, while the consolation final between the two losing squads will be played at 1 p.m.
