The Belfast Rotary Club is holding its third annual Belfast Harbor Fest from Friday, Aug. 17, to Sunday, Aug. 19. Headlining the weekend of events is the National Boatbuilding Challenge.

The weekend of events kicks off Friday night at 6 p.m. with a Launch Party under the tent on Steamboat Landing at the foot of Commercial Street. There will be live music from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. along with food and drinks for sale. The party is being hosted by Three Tides and there is a $10 cover charge.

Saturday at 7:30 a.m., there will be pancake and sausage breakfast in the Boathouse until 10:30 a.m. The cost for the breakfast is $5. There will also be registration for the Bug Run 5K road race from 7:30 until 8:15 a.m. with the race taking off on Commercial Street at 8:30 a.m.

The National Boatbuilding Challenge will take place under the tent on Steamboat Landing from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Teams of two will have up to four hours to construct a wooden skiff and then will test their boats in a relay race across the harbor around 4 p.m. Spectators are welcome to watch the competition with no admission fee.

Come Boating!, Belfast’s community boating program, will host its 12th annual Rowing Regatta as part of the Belfast Harbor Fest. There will be races for adults and youth with awards given in various classes. For more information, go to

Among the other all-day events planned with no admission fee are a Classic Small Boat Show, Maritime Exhibits, children’s activities, vendors and lots of different food.

There will also be live music during the day. The Belfast Bay Fiddlers will play from 10 to 11:15 a.m.; George Lirakis from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m.; the Mcfarland Brothers from 1:45 to 2:45 p.m. and from 3 to 4:45 p.m., the ever popular Willy Kelly Band.

On Sunday, from noon to 3 p.m., Habitat for Humanity of Waldo County will be holding its Habitat Lobster Fest. Tickets for the fundraiser are $25 each for lobster (steak will be available for those who don’t enjoy lobster), clams, corn on the cob, chips and homemade pies. Tickets can be purchased from any Habitat board member, by calling 338-2344, or at Mailloux and Marden Law Offices in Belfast.

Also on Sunday, beginning around 10:30 a.m., there will be a cardboard boat race, taking off from Steamboat Landing.
