The Waldo County Extension Association will hold its annual meeting Monday, Sept. 10, at 5:45 p.m. at the Waldo County Technical Center, located at 1022 Waterville Rd. in Waldo. The meeting will begin with some local snacks prepared by the Waldo County Technical Center culinary arts students.

The theme of this year’s annual meeting will be to highlight the innovative garden projects that many Waldo County schools have been working to implement. Several representatives conducting garden project programs from school districts in Waldo County (RSUs 3 and 20) will engage in a panel discussion of their respective program successes and challenges. Ellen Libby, extension educator in 4-H Youth Development and Healthy Lifestyles, will provide a statewide overview of school garden program development, and Waldo County 4-H Program Aide Joyce Weaver will discuss how 4-H programming can and does support local school garden programs.

Following the panel discussion, Waldo County Executive Association members and audience members will be invited to engage in a discussion of how the association can support and augment these school garden projects. UMaine Extension is one of many area agencies that provide community and economic development services to the citizens of Waldo County by putting research-based knowledge to work in homes, businesses, farms and communities.

UMaine Extension functions under a system that draws its direction from local needs. County executive committees formed of local citizens, who represent the population of each county, work with their extension staff to assess and prioritize the educational needs of the county. The prioritized needs form the basis of county and state plans of work. To make sure the work of the Waldo County Extension office meets local needs, county residents are encouraged to attend this year’s annual meeting, both to hear about the school garden project efforts taking place in their community and to shape the extension’s future involvement in these programs.
