Left Bank Books, 109 Church St., will welcome long-time food historian and freelance food writer Sandra L. Oliver for a signing of her new book “Maine Home Cooking” Saturday, Sept. 15 at 2 p.m.

Oliver is well known for her books “Saltwater Foodways,” “Food in Colonial and Federal America” and “Giving Thanks”; and for her regular weekend column in The Bangor Daily News called “Taste Buds.” She lives on Islesboro, where she gardens, preserves, cooks and teaches sustainable ways of life, so she is well qualified to share her wisdom and useful advice on preparing delicious meals from Maine’s broad culinary heritage.

Her newest book is a compendium of 175 delicious, no-nonsense recipes with handsome illustrations from classic Downeast dishes such as salmon loaf and venison chili, Whoopie Pies and Needhams to more modern fare such as shrimp pesto roll and Cowboy Caviar.
