On Tuesday, Oct. 2, at 6:30 p.m. in the Belfast Free Library, mushroom expert, author and guide Greg Marley will give a presentation on "Maine's Bountiful Harvest: Wild Mushrooms as Functional Food." This free event is sponsored by the Belfast Free Library and the Belfast Co-op.

According to Greg Marley, Maine is home to some of the tastiest wild mushrooms available. And, he adds, some of the best edible mushrooms are among the best-researched medicinal mushrooms. Join Greg Marley on an exploration of Maine's mushrooms as functional food. Though definitions vary, functional food contains health benefits that exceed its simple nutritional value. For example, the Hen of the Woods is a favorite edible mushroom, giving an abundant harvest for those fortunate to find one. It is also one of the mushrooms being studied as a potential cancer medication. Much of the immune-stimulating value can be gained by including these tasty mushrooms as part of your regular meals. He will lead us on a romp through Maine's wild mushrooms focusing on those with health benefits while exploring the common edibles. Participants are invited to bring mushrooms in for identification help before the talk starts.

Greg Marley has been collecting, studying, eating, growing and teaching mushrooms for 40 years. Marley has spread his love affair with mushrooms to hundreds of others through walks, talks and classes held across New England over the past 20 years. The founder of "Mushrooms for Health," he oversees a small company providing medicinal mushroom education and products made with Maine medicinal mushrooms.

Marley is the author of Mushrooms for Health; Medicinal Secrets of Northeastern Fungi, (Downeast Books, 2009) and the award winning Chanterelle Dreams, Amanita Nightmares; The Love Lore and Mystic of Mushrooms, (Chelsea Green, 2010). He is a volunteer mushroom identification consultant to Poison Control Centers across New England, providing expertise in mushroom poisoning cases and a frequent lecturer to college groups. He lives and mushrooms with his family along the coast of Maine. For further information, visit his website at: mushrooms4health.com.
