The third annual Joy to be Bald fundraiser will be held Sunday, Oct. 14, from 2 to 6 p.m. at Lori's Cafe, 504 Belfast-Augusta Rd., Liberty. This annual benefit raises funds each year to aid local families that are fighting cancer.

The event originated in 2010, spearheaded by Lori Mayer, owner of Lori's Cafe, as a single fundraising event for her dear friend, Joy Mehuren, who had been diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer. An idea was born from a discussion with a customer to shave Lori's head for donations. Several others volunteered to be shaved and, between head-shavings and a bake sale, just over $5,000 was raised. Though Joy lost her battle with cancer in July of 2011, the original group of organizers decided to go forward in Joy's honor and continue the event as an annual fundraiser for local people struggling with cancer.

The second annual Joy to be Bald fundraiser raised another $4,000-plus, muc of which was donated to Lori Elkins-Montminy, suffering from breast cancer, and the rest was split among several other local families to help defray some of their expenses related to cancer treatments.

Each year the event gets bigger, with recipient families joining in to help with the next year's event.

This year's event features a 2.2-mile walk against cancer with walkers collecting sonsor donations, business sponsorships, a barbecue put on by the Liberty Fire Department, head-shavings, a donated bounce house for kids, face-painting, a silent auction of donated items form area businesses and more. This year's recipient is Heather Wilson, a 31-year-old mother of three who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer.
