The Belfast Flying Shoes contra dance series continues Friday, Nov. 2 at the American Legion Hall Post No. 43, 143 Church St. The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a community dance led by caller Chrissy Fowler of Belfast with music by the All-Comers Band, led by Tom Fowler, Phyllis Buchanan and Jennifer Armstrong. Fun and simple dances will be taught, and both beginner and experienced dancers are encouraged to brush up on and learn new skills. All musicians are welcome to sit in.

The main contra dance will begin at 8 p.m. with music by master fiddler Rodney Miller, joined on the music stage by Owen Marshall (guitar and harmonium) and Glen Loper (mandolin, banjo, percussion). Chrissy Fowler of Belfast will call.

Miller was designated a Master Fiddler in 1983 by the National Endowment for the Arts and is widely considered to be the foremost exponent of New England style fiddling, a uniquely American blend of French Canadian and Celtic influences. Over the past 35 years, he has toured the United States, British Isles, Australia and Denmark; performed and taught at hundreds of music and dance festivals; and recorded more than 10 fiddle albums. His latest, “Spyglass: Waltzes,” has been called Reiki for the world.

Multi-instrumentalist Marshall is a highly sought-after accompanist in many genres who has traveled and performed all over the world with many of traditional music’s top acts. Loper is a dance musician and music teacher, calling it the best job he has had by far. Fowler cheerfully leads folks of all ages in traditional New England social dance. She is gifted at building community through dance and movement.

Admission for the community dance is $2, $1 for children. For the main dance, the price is $10 for those older than 20); $7 for those 13 to 20 as well as adult All-Comers; and $4 for children. As always, anyone who brings a box fan for the windows gets a dollar discount. For more information, call Fowler at 338-0979 or visit belfastflyingshoes.org.
