The Belfast Curling Club hosted 80 curlers from Canada, New England, the Mid-Atlantic States, Minnesota and Texas Nov. 9-11 for its third annual Maine-iac ‘Spiel, a three-day competitive curling event.

The 2011 champs, Steve McPherson, Marty Rourke, Andrew Hatch and Jeff Bailes of Lennoxville, Quebec, returned, with their spouses, as two teams and one of those teams again came out on top.

Hatch, Rourke, Lorraine Cournoyer and Jody Bailes were awarded a 40-pound bronze lobster traveling trophy — almost the same weight as a curling stone — to display at their home curling club for the next year.

Melvin Shaw, Courtney Shaw, Jeremy Vanderhouten and Kaitie Bailes of Potomac, Md. were the runners-up.

Throughout the weekend, the state was celebrated in vibrant fashion as Maine sponsors provided the visiting competitors with a taste of fresh food from the sea and local farms; locally crafted beverages; entertainment from local musicians; and for finalists, an array of prizes representing the distinctive artisans, entrepreneurs and recreational opportunities in the Pine Tree State.

Upcoming opportunities for the public to view a live competitive curling event at the Belfast Curling Club, between a variety of teams from around the US and Canada, will be the Ben Ames Williams Mixed Bonspiel Jan. 14-16 and the Men’s Little International Bonspiel Feb. 17-20.
