The Mount View wrestling team opened its 2012-13 season Dec. 8, squaring off with Oceanside of Rockland/Thomaston, Nokomis of Newport, Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield and host Mount Blue in a five-team meet.

The Mustangs split against those four opponents, picking up wins over the Mariners (54-12) and Huskies (36-33), while falling to the Warriors (39-22) and the Cougars (39-22).

Oceanside is a first-year club program.

Mount View's standout performances came from senior Jake Blanchette, Kendric Shibles and Tony Barnard, said Mustang coach Hamilton Richards.

Blanchette went 4-0 on the day in his four matches, while Shibles was 2-2 and Barnard 2-1. Mustang coach Richards said Blanchette is still not at 100 percent as he's recuperating from surgery following the football season, while Shibles has "improved considerably" from last year and Barnard "displayed a lot of natural speed and some technique he picked up when he wrestled in middle school."

Mount View began with its team victory over Oceanside before falling to Mount Blue. Richards said he "wasn't real happy" after the loss to the Warriors as morale was down from the loss to the Cougars, but the team squeaked out a win over the Huskies to finish at .500 on the day.

"Overall, a slower start than I'd like, but the kids are showing some clear promise," the veteran coach said. "It just may take half the season or more to really get them performing at the level they should."
