The Searsport boys basketball team took to the road Dec. 29 to take on Deer Isle-Stonington, one of Eastern Class D's top squads, to wrap up 2012.

The Vikings were overwhelmed by the host Mariners, who essentially put the game out of reach in the second quarter and surged to a 64-46 victory.

The Mariners led 18-9 after the first quarter, jumped to a 38-21 halftime lead, while the Vikings rallied in the third quarter and trailed 54-42 after three quarters.

Buddy Ellis netted 12 points for Searsport, while Dylan Sieber and Austin Bean each added nine; Jacob Powell, seven; Dillan Moody, five; and Troy Reynolds and Bryce Shorey, both two. Sieber netted three treys, while Ellis added two and Powell one.

For Deer Isle-Stonington, Sam Grindle scored 15 points, while Hayden Ciomei added 14; Stuart Bray, 12; Connor Morey, nine; Lucas Oliver, eight; Jared Gove, four; and Nathan Davis, two. Grindle converted three treys, while Morey added two and Oliver and Ciomei each one.

The Vikings were 2-of-6 (33 percent) from the foul line, while the Mariners were 9-of-15 (60 percent).

In the Maine Principals' Association Heal Point Standings for Eastern Class C, Searsport (2-2, 4.4753 points) is eighth, while Houlton (7-0, 16.1420 points) is first in the 17-team region. The top 11 teams qualify for the playoffs.
