The sixteenth annual New Year's By the Bay celebration ushered in 2013 amid a cacophony of drumming, fire and snowballs Dec. 31.

Venues including churches, theaters, the Belfast Co-op and the Belfast Free Library played host to mimes, poets, musicians, dancers, caricaturists and balloon artists throughout the afternoon and late into the night.

Planned horse-drawn carriage rides were canceled due to the cold weather.

At 11:50 p.m., the Drum & Rabble Corps led assembled merrymakers from the Main Street traffic light to the tenth annual Bonfire by the Bay, which quickly devolved into a spirited snowball fight to welcome the new year.
