Planet Earth has lost a gentleman. Herbert Lyle McClure died Dec. 18, 2012. Born Jan. 10, 1920, in Wayland, Ohio, he was the son of Frank and Gladys (Griffith) McClure.

He served in the Navy in the South Pacific from Guadalcanal to Iwo Jima where he witnessed the flag waving on Iwo Jima. Herbert married Elisabeth Redfern April 28, l945. They moved to Belfast in 1970 to start a new adventure raising chickens, sheep, rabbits, geese, a horse and a pony. In 1986 they retired and moved into town.

Herbert is survived by his wife of 67 years and his three children James and his wife Linda, Andrew and his wife Carole, and Dorothy and her husband Ronald. Herbert also had seven grand children — Meghan, Brittany, Abigail, Benjamin, Phoebe, Megan, and Ian. He also had five great grandchildren.

There is to be a service in New Hampshire for the immediate family then later he will be buried in Ravenna, Ohio.
