The body of a 38-year-old man from Bangor who had been missing since September was located on the shore in Prospect late Thursday morning, Jan. 31.

Waldo County Chief Deputy Jeff Trafton said a man who was walking along the shore Thursday morning saw the remains of Shawn Flewelling on the beach and called police at about 10:45 a.m. Flewelling's remains were found on the Prospect side of the river, directly across the way from the Bucksport mill.

Trafton said Flewelling had been missing from the Bangor area since Sept. 27, 2012, and while en route to the scene, Detective Jason Bosco contacted the Bangor Police Department to inquire about any active missing persons cases.

Meanwhile as police arrived on scene, Trafton said officers found some identification that led police to believe the body was that of Flewelling.

"He still had a wallet in his pocket and that's how we were able to figure out his name," said Trafton.

According to statewide media reports dating back to the time of Flewelling's disappearance, Bangor police did not indicate whether foul play was suspected in the case.
