The Belfast wrestling team brought home three Eastern Class B individual titles and qualified 10 of its mat student-athletes to the state championship meet.

The Lions, who finished second to Camden Hills in the regional meet Saturday, Feb. 2 at Maine Central Institute, will vie for state Class B championships on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 9:30 a.m. at the Augusta Civic Center.

The Lions will be well represented at the state meet after a bundle of BAHS student-athletes qualified from the regional competition.

The top four wrestlers in each weight class from each regional meet advance to the state competition.

On Saturday, Belfast crowned three regional champions — Dagan Berenyi, Brent Waterman and Peter Kelley. Belfast also qualified 10 student-athletes to the states.

Advancing to the states were Berenyi (1st at 126 pounds), Brent Waterman (1st at 132), Kelley (1st at 195), Michael McFadden (2nd at 145), Brandon Waterman (3rd at 120), Walker Roberts (3rd at 138), Gregory Stevens (3rd at 152), Wyatt Roberts (3rd at 182), Matthew Oxton (4th at 113) and Austin Sprague (4th at 160).

The regional team scores were: Camden Hills 182, Belfast 138.5, Ellsworth 137.5, Caribou 99, Maine Central Institute 61, Medomak Valley 60, Mount Desert Island 44, Hermon 42, Oceanside 35 and Central of East Corinth 25.

The individual Lion regional meet results were:

113 pounds — Oxton received a first-round bye; was pinned by Dallas Ball, Ocean, at 3:03; received another bye; won by major decision over Jared Overlock, Med, 10-0; beat Harry Larrabee, Ells, 9-4; and was pinned by James Archer, CH, at 0:49 in the consolation final. Oxton finished fourth.

120 pounds — Brandon Waterman received a first-round bye; beat Jonathan Sargent, MDI, 7-5; lost to Dylan Dahlbergh, MCI, 6-4; pinned Matt Farnham, Her, at 0:53; and beat Sargent, MDI, 13-9 in the consolation final. Waterman finished third.

126 pounds — Berenyi received a first-round bye; pinned Dominic Frongillo, MDI, at 1:39; pinned Riley McCollett, Med, at 0:57; and beat Chris Weiss, CH, 8-5 in the championship final. Berenyi finished first.

132 pounds — Brent Waterman received first- and second-round byes; won by technical fall over Calan Bragg, CH, 16-0; and won by technical fall over Brendan Wood, Car, 16-1 in the championship final. Waterman finished first.

138 pounds — Walker Roberts received a first-round bye; was pinned by Robert Caudill, Car, at 1:41; received two more byes; won by technical fall over Wilder Young, MDI, 17-1; and pinned Scott Parr, Ells, at 1:57. Roberts finished third.

145 pounds — McFadden received a first-round bye; beat Jacob Bither, Car, 8-3; beat Elijah O'Connor, MDI, 3-2; and was pinned by Coleman Powers, CH, at 2:55 of the championship final. McFadden finished second.

152 pounds — Stevens received first- and second-round byes; lost to Joe Wright, Ells, 11-5; pinned David Savage, MDI, at 1:49; and beat Eli Smith, CH, 11-9 in the consolation final. Stevens finished third.

160 pounds — Sprague received a first-round bye; lost by major decision to Paul Young, Cen, 12-0; received another bye; pinned Nick Anderson, Med, at 3:58; pinned Taylor Crosby, CH, at 4:50; and was pinned by Sam Lounder, Ells, at 1:19 of the consolation final. Sprague finished fourth.

182 pounds — Wyatt Roberts received first- and second-round byes; lost to Cyril Miller, Med, 3-0; pinned Jacob Burby, Car, at 1:53; and beat Brian Jones, CH, 5-1 in the consolation final. Roberts finished third.

195 pounds — Kelley received first- and second-round byes; pinned Travis Stone, Ocean, at 2:17; and pinned Owen Gilbert, Med, at 0:22 in the championship final. Kelley finished first.

285 pounds — Jared Vaughn received a first-round bye; was pinned by Jared Bragg, Ells, at 0:48; received two more byes; and was pinned by Kaylo Littlejohn, CH, at 1:39.
