Only a few short weeks after claiming the state Class B title in his weight class, Belfast senior grappler Peter Kelley set his sights on a New England crown at the 49th annual New England Interscholastic Wrestling Championships at the Providence Career and Technical Center in Providence, R.I.

While Kelley managed a win in the prestigious tournament, he fell short of the coveted crown as he went 1-2 at the New England competition.

Kelley finished second in his weight class at the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B championships Jan. 26 at Cony High School and won the Eastern Class B title Feb. 2 at Maine Central Institute.

Kelley beat Michael Kimbrough (Mt. Pleasant, R.I.), 8-6; lost by technical fall to Leo Trindade (Billerica, Mass.), 16-1; pinned Walters Ndi (Concord, N.H.), at 3:32; and was pinned by Joe Chimelski (Nashua North, N.H.) at 0:30.

Kelley was attempting to become the second New England champion from Belfast Area High School in two years after Brent Waterman won the award last year in the 132-pound weight class.

Waterman injured himself the day before the state Class B championships and ultimately, did not qualify for the event.
