Two drivers escaped injury after their vehicles crashed head-on while traveling on Merrithew Road Thursday morning, March 21.

Searsport Police Chief Dick LaHaye said the accident occurred just after 10 a.m. as a plow truck for the Town of Searsport was clearing the road, which was still covered with slush and snow.

LaHaye said the plow truck was headed toward Mount Ephraim Road on Merrithew Road when 69-year-old Guy Sanderson of Monroe approached the plow truck from behind in a 2008 Jeep Cherokee and attempted to pass the town vehicle. Sanderson passed the truck after both vehicles crested a hill, and LaHaye said Sanderson hit a 2002 Mazda that was being driven by 22-year-old Kile Lemieux of Monroe.

Lemieux attempted to hit his brakes but he was unable to avoid the crash due to the slushy road conditions, the chief said.

Both vehicles were totaled as a result of the accident.

Along with LaHaye, Searsport fire and ambulance personnel responded to the scene.
