A bicyclist escaped serious injury after a vehicle on Route 137 in Belfast struck him Friday, April 19.

Belfast Police Officer Wendall Ward said Catherine Carter, 25, of Lincolnville was driving east on Route 137 in a 2007 Hyundai Sonata shortly before 9:30 a.m. when she started to feel nauseous. While she was struggling to not get sick in her vehicle, she took her eyes off the road and drifted to the right where she struck a trailer being towed behind a bicycle ridden by Timothy White Jr., 26, of Waldo, Ward said.

Ward said the collision knocked White off of his bicycle and, except for a swollen ankle, he was otherwise unharmed.

"He was lucky," Ward said. "He didn't have a scratch on him other than his ankle."

Ward said White was transported to Waldo County General Hospital to be evaluated as a precaution.

“He thought he only sprained his ankle, but they convinced him to go to the hospital to get checked out,” Ward said.

Carter will not face any charges, Ward said.

Ward said the Sonata suffered damage to the headlight and fender, and a mirror was knocked off. He estimated the total damage to the vehicle was between $1,200 and $1,500.

The bicycle suffered little to no damage as a result of the collision, Ward said.
