The following is a synopsis of the 2012-13 Belfast Area High School softball team:

Coach/years coached current team: Chris Bartlett, ninth season.

Last year's record/playoff information: 5-11, 15th in Eastern Class B. The Lions did not qualify for the playoffs.

Roster: Seniors Katrina Lapham (catcher), Killyan Richards (pitcher, first base), Alexis Porter (outfield) and Jordan Ghent (outfield); juniors Ashley Littlefield (pitcher, first base), Grace Davis (pitcher, third base), Dakota Black (outfield) and Madison Cummings (second base); sophomore Casey Thayer (utility); and freshmen Mariah Sturgis (shortstop, catcher), Breann Cummings (utility) and Kelci Faulkingham (outfield).

Outlook: After falling short of a postseason berth last season, the Lions look to make improvements on the diamond this spring with a balanced mixture of four seniors, four juniors, one sophomore and three freshmen.

Richards and Littlefield will be Belfast's two pitchers, while Davis also has joined the pitching fold. The Lions have a talented backstop in Lapham and have several other integral pieces that will keep them in the midst of things in the Kennebec Athletic Conference Class B division.

"I feel our team speed is much better all-around and our freshmen and sophomores are very talented and are working hard pushing the veterans every practice to get better," said Bartlett. "Our weakness is that we will be young or inexperienced in a few spots early on, but the girls are working hard and picking things up very quickly."

Bartlett said he expects Oceanside of Rockland/Thomaston, Medomak Valley of Waldoboro and Nokomis of Newport to be among the KVAC's elite.

"Every team is a challenge in our conference," he said. "I say this every year, in KVAC [Class] B if you don't show up and play your best game every night then anyone can win in this league.

"If we can make ourselves better at our positions every day and become great teammates in the process then the big things will take care of themselves."
