Two talented Midcoast high school cross-country runners raced into the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B annuals as individual league champions on Saturday, Oct. 19 with strong performances at Cony High School.

Oceanside's Abby Hersom and Camden Hills' Ben Trapani, both seniors, proved the fastest on the course in their division at the league championship meet.

Hersom outlasted a field of 69 female runners over the 3.1-mile course in 20 minutes and 49 seconds, while Trapani bested a group 73 male runners in 17:17.

Trapani outlegged runner-up Chris Cote of Waterville by 23 seconds, while Hersom beat runner-up Brittany Bowman of Camden Hills by 18 seconds.

All runners in Class A and B competed together in the league varsity boys and girls races, and then the runners were separated into their respective classes.

Overall, with Class A and B combined, in the girls race, the top four were: 1, Teresa Murphy, Brunswick, 20:40.4; 2, Anne Guadalupi, Cony, 20:43.6; 3, Hersom, Ocean, 20:49.8; and 4, Bowman, CH, 21:07.1.

For boys, the top four were: 1, Josh Horne, Mount Blue, 17:05.4; 2, Caleb Lord, Hampden Academy, 17:07.1; 3, Aaron Willingham, Mount Blue, 17:07.8; and 4, Trapani, CH, 17:17.5.

The KVAC Class B girls team scores were: Maranacook of Readfield 61, Camden Hills 91, Winslow 107, Waterville 132, Leavitt of Turner 132, Morse of Bath 154, Lincoln Academy of Newcastle 170, Oceanside of Rockland/Thomaston 180, Belfast 189, Medomak Valley of Waldoboro 218 and Erskine Academy of South China 248.

Maranacook finished with a total seven-runner time of 1:55:13.70, with an average runner time of 23:02.74, while Camden Hills was at 1:57:16.20 and 23:27.24, Oceanside at 2:11:25 and 26:17, Belfast at 2:24:57.70 and 28:59.54 and Medomak Valley at 2:16:24.70 and 27:16.94.

The KVAC Class B boys team scores were: Maranacook 57, Lincoln Academy 81, Camden Hills 89, Waterville 131, Erskine Academy 150, Morse 151, Belfast 152, Leavitt of Turner 166, Winslow 185 and Medomak Valley 209. Oceanside did not have five runners to record a team score.

Maranacook finished with a total seven-runner time of 1:33:21.70, with an average runner time of 18:40.34, while Camden Hills was at 1:35:49.60 and 19:09.92, Belfast 1:41:14.50 and 20:14.90 and Medomak Valley 1:46:48.70 and 21:21.74.
