What the Belfast Area High School junior varsity field hockey team lacked in team wins this season the Lions made up for in valuable game experience, which should be good news for the varsity in the coming years.

Under the tutelage of coach Marci Zaniboni, the Lions, made up of nine freshmen, one sophomore, three juniors and two seniors, finished the year with a 2-7-3 record.

Team members included Abigail Berry, Amalia Kockerols, Anna Baiungo, Ali Walker, Jacqueline Awalt, Jennifer Beal, Kaitlin Goslant, Katlyn Young, Karlee Parker, Kaylen Ottman, Meredith Short, Noelle Morris, Tierra Stevens, Valentine Delcuve and Victoria Curtis.

Though the team generated only two wins, Zaniboni said this “was a year of development” for the young Lions.

“Despite our seven losses, we made tremendous progress working as a team unit,” the coach said. “Several players had not ever played field hockey before this fall. It was a blending of experience.”

Young, a junior, was one of the team's leaders as “she is a hard worker with a winning attitude.”

Belfast's season ended with a 2-1 win over Oceanside on Oct. 15 in Rockland. Ottman tied the game with a second-half goal, while Berry knocked in the game-winner late in regulation.

“This game was the highlight and perfect ending to a season of building teamwork, game sense and skill development,” said Zaniboni.
