Peggy Richards passed away peacefully on Nov. 2. She is survived by her loving family; husband David; son David, daughter Cynthia and their spouses; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law; cousins; and friends.

Peggy was born in Fort Wayne, Ind., on Dec. 14, 1928. She held both a teaching degree and a nursing degree. She taught English and debate at Lawrence High School in Fairfield, Maine, and later worked as a registered nurse, including at Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast.

She is remembered for her wit, intelligence, and love of people and nature. She lived simply, enjoying trees, flowers and birds, spending her later years with her husband in their cottage on Swan Lake.

She loved her family and friends intensely, supporting their decisions and efforts without failure. Her loss is tempered by the following passage written to her children, “Find a faith that will sustain you through the dark times but a faith that will not blind you with unreason.”

She will be missed and loved always.

A private memorial service will be held next spring, Peggy’s favorite time of year. A graveside memorial will also be held in the springtime for family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, and in respect for her love of nature and continual growth, donations may be made in her name to the American Chestnut Foundation, 160 Zillicoa Street, Suite D, Asheville, N.C., 28801.
