City councilors appointed Christopher Hyk to the third open seat on the Regional School Unit 20 board of directors Tuesday, Nov. 19.

Hyk was one of three candidates who ran for two vacant seats on the board of directors during the Nov. 5 election. A third seat became available after the ballot was set when board member Charles Poirier resigned earlier in the fall.

During an interview with The Republican Journal in October, Hyk said he wanted to find a way to find a balance between offering a quality education for students and protecting property owners who continue to see increases in their taxes.

Hyk said he would also like to provide more opportunities for residents to speak during board meetings and encouraged residents to attend or watch the meetings to stay informed on what is happening in the district.

Councilors unanimously approved appointing Hyk to the third seat. With his appointment, Belfast will have filled all six of the city's seats on the 18-member board.
