Despite cloudy skies giving way to a sunny day, the weather remained chilly, as the temperatures hovered near freezing, for the annual Thomas F. Chester Frozen 5-Kilometer Road Race on Saturday morning, Dec. 7 at Point Lookout Resort and Conference Center.

More than 50 runners and walkers turned out for the event that challenged participants to tackle the steep incline of Ducktrap Mountain. The route started at the base, near the Pine Cone Cafe, and ended just below the summit that sits atop the mountain.

The first finisher overall, and first male to cross the demanding 3.1-mile course, was Thor Emory of Camden, with a time of 20 minutes and 17 seconds. The first female finisher was Amy Root of Hope, in 22:47. She was ninth overall.

The Roots nearly made it a clean sweep as David Root finished second overall, 22 seconds behind winner Emory.

The event was part of the Pen Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce Christmas by the Sea weekend celebration. There also was cookie decorating for children and Santa made an appearance.

Fifty-plus runners participated last year.

West Bay Rotary Club of Camden organized the race, sponsored by Maine Boats, Homes and Harbors, Allen Insurance and Financial, Midcoast Home Rentals, Global Packing and Shipping, Point Lookout, Leonard’s, Alex Cohen of Camden Real Estate, Commonwealth Cares Foundation and Camden Accommodations

The race, in memory of Thomas F. Chester, benefited Augie’s Quest, an ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) charity. A runner in high school, “Big Tom” lost his battle with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, in June of 2009.

ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord, eventually leading to death. There is no cure for the disease and there is no recovery from it.
