A Sunday morning fire destroyed a garage and damaged a home, but the residents were able to escape without injury.

Belfast Fire Chief Jim Richards said the fire, which was reported at 10:45 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, on Hayford Hill, started in a garage before spreading to the residence. When firefighters arrived, Richards said the garage was engulfed in flames.

Homeowner Josh Brown was inside with his wife and two children at the time the fire started in the garage, which was not attached to the home, Richards said. Brown and his family were able to escape the residence without injury.

Richards said the home sustained heat and water damage on the end closest to the garage. The fire “flattened” the garage, Richards said.

Twenty firefighters from Belfast, along with crews from Belmont and Morrill, battled the fire, Richards said.

Hayford Hill is located off of Route 3.

The home was believed to be insured and Richards said he is unsure what caused the fire, but determined it was accidental in nature. He said he will not call the state fire marshal's office for an investigation into the cause of the blaze unless the homeowner's insurance requests one.
