Lois Jane Leaf, 86, died at the Island Nursing Home in Deer Isle on Dec. 6, 2013, following a prolonged illness. Better known as Loie to all who knew her, she was born June 9, 1927 in Orange, New Jersey, to Charles L. and Julia T. Leaf who relocated to Surry for their retirement years.

Loie graduated from Syracuse University as a baccalaureate nurse which became her lifelong career, residing in various cities in the U.S. before settling in Maine. In midlife, she earned a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Maine, teaching school for a brief period. Her last residence was in Belfast, where she also worked at the Waldo County General Hospital. Her life centered on caring for others, both physically and emotionally, as reflected in every aspect of her life.

Loie was predeceased by her brother, Charles C. Leaf of Surry. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Elizabeth B. Leaf; her nieces, Lucy B. Leaf, Nancy L. Salminen, and Barbara S. Leaf; and two nephews, Charles L. Leaf and William B. Leaf.

The family wishes to express thanks and appreciation for the compassionate care Loie received at the Island Nursing Home. She will be remembered in a private family ceremony.
