The recent weather conditions that have left many in Waldo County without power for much of this week also created dangerous situations for local drivers.

Emergency personnel responded to Swan Lake Avenue for a vehicle that rolled onto its roof into a ditch during the early evening hours of Friday, Dec. 27.

The single-vehicle crash involved an Isuzu Rodeo that was resting on its roof in the ditch on Swan Lake Avenue in Swanville. The crash was reported shortly before 4 p.m. Traffic was reduced to one lane while emergency crews worked to clear the scene.

On Monday, Dec. 29, Chief Deputy Jeff Trafton of the Waldo County Sheriff's Office was only able to confirm that a woman and children were inside of the vehicle at the time of the rollover. He was unable to provide additional details as the full accident report had not yet been filed.

Before the crash was reported, a brief but intense burst of snow moved through the area and coated the roads.

It is unclear at this time if anyone was taken to the hospital to be treated for any injuries.

Belfast Fire and Ambulance, as well as deputies from the Waldo County Sheriff's Office responded to the crash.

As the ice storm built in strength Monday morning, Dec. 23, 30-year-old Nicholas J. Starrett of Winterport lost control as he was driving on Route 1 in Northport in a 2002 Chevrolet pickup that was registered to Irv's Drywall in Warren. According to the accident report from WCSO Deputy James Porter, the pickup went into a 180-degree spin before leaving the road on the right hand side. The truck came to rest after striking a mailbox and a frozen snow bank.

"…[T]he drivers side rear body panel was folded under from the impact with the snow bank," stated Porter.

Starrett was not injured in the crash, the report stated.

On Dec. 28, Morrill resident Luke Simmons was traveling west on Poors Mill Road in Waldo in a 2008 Ford pickup when a deer ran into the road from the woods. Simmons' pickup was towed from the scene of the crash due to disabling damage, according to the accident report.

Simmons did not suffer any injuries during the collision.
