Every year about this time, championship visions dance through the heads of Medomak Valley High School cheerleaders and their coaches. And, more often then not, those dreamy aspirations are realized.

The Panthers of Waldoboro hoped that would be the case again on Monday, Jan. 20, Martin Luther King Day, when they unveiled their routine at the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B championship competition at the Augusta Civic Center.

Alas, Medomak Valley performed well, but were edged for the title by Gardiner. The Panthers settled for second.

Additionally, Mount View of Thorndike finished fifth and Oceanside of Rockland/Thomaston 10th among 11 teams.

The team scores were: Gardiner 128.3, Medomak Valley 123.2, Leavitt of Turner 122.3, Erskine Academy of South China 104.4, Mount View 97.7, Waterville 92.2, Nokomis of Newport 90.6, Morse of Bath 83.2, Winslow 75.4, Oceanside 71.3 and Lincoln Academy of Newcastle 61.4.

The Panthers had won recent league and regional crowns, as well as performed well at the state level in recent years. Last year, MVHS won the league and regional crowns and finished second at the states.

Next, Medomak Valley will toil in the Western Class B competition on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 12:15 p.m. at the same Augusta site, while Mount View and Oceanside will participate in the Eastern Class B championships the same day at 12:15 p.m. at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

"I was actually really pleased with their performance,” said veteran Panther coach Rachel Coor. “They did a lot of things well. We had one little mishap in a stunting section, but they recovered very nicely from it. The scores across the board were very low and obviously the kids are disappointed. I have a group of kids that work to win. We've got some things we can work on this week so hopefully Saturday we'll have a higher score.”

On Monday at the league competition, the judges' scores for the top team and the local squads in Class B showed:

Gardiner scored 27.7, 23.9, 21.9, 26.5, 28.3 for 128.3, with no deductions and Medomak Valley scored 23.3, 26.3, 24.7, 25.9 and 23 for 123.2, with no deductions. Mount View scored 21.3, 16.5, 17.3, 22.1 and 20.5 for 97.7, with no deductions, and Oceanside 12.5, 14.7, 14.3, 15.4 and 14.4 for 71.3, with no deductions.

Mount View coach Carol Bryant was happy with her team's performance as the squad exceeded not only the coach's expectations, but their own.

“I think they did a really great job,” said Bryant. “They pulled together at the end as a team and really sharpened up things they needed to do. They got fifth so they moved up from [last year]. It's the second-best we have ever done and they beat their own personal goal of finishing above middle of the pack.”

Bryant said she plans on “sharpening their moves and transitions” before the regional competition.

Oceanside coach Hope Billingsley said, "It was a relief" to return to the mat at KVACs, after a last-second injury forced the Mariners out of the competition a year ago. Despite finishing 10th among 11 squads, the coach feels the Mariners "are heading in the right direction."

“I think it went well,” she said. “I think nerves played a big part. They've got to get over the nerve part and they've got to have more self-confidence. That's our biggest thing we need to have for Saturday [at the regional competition].”

In the KVAC Class A competition, Lewiston finished first and scored 29.6, 29.8, 30.4, 29.5 and 29.0 for 148.3, with a one-point deduction for a final of 147.3. Runner-up Bangor scored 29.2, 27.2, 29.3, 29.1 and 29.0 for 143.8, with a one-point deduction for a final of 142.8.

Also competing in Class A were Oxford Hills of South Paris (118.8), Edward Little of Auburn (117.4), Brunswick (112.6), Brewer (110.2), Lawrence of Fairfield (99.1), Hampden Academy (97.6), Mount Ararat of Topsham (96.3), Mount Blue of Farmington (93.8) and Cony of Augusta (88.6).
