A Searsport woman who was arrested after Bangor Police charged her with theft at a Queen City business Saturday, Jan. 18, was arrested again in Belfast after she was accused of shoplifting and violating her bail conditions the following day.

Belfast police summoned Shae Garton, 25, of Searsport, for theft by unauthorized taking or transfer and arrested Garton on a charge of violating conditions of release Sunday, Jan. 19.

Belfast Detective Sgt. Bryan Cunningham said Garton's trouble began in Bangor when employees at Ocean State Job Lot reported Garton had entered the store with an empty shopping bag and obtained a set of sheets, which she placed in the bag and brought to the service desk in an attempt to gain store credit for the item she never purchased. Store staff told police they suspected Garton had succeeded in executing that procedure on at least two prior occasions, Cunningham said.

"She didn't even leave the store," said Cunningham.

Cunningham said when Bangor police interviewed Garton, she admitted she had committed thefts in the same fashion at the Ocean State Job Lot store in Belfast.

On Sunday, Cunningham said employees at Hannaford in Belfast called police to report a woman who was suspected of shoplifting there. The woman was later identified as Garton.

"She said she was stealing alcohol for her alcoholic [relative]," said Cunningham.
