An off-duty Waldo County Sheriff's officer helped avert a potential structure fire at 699 Slab City Road Wednesday, Jan. 29.

The homeowner had connected jumper cables to his Buick Park Avenue and gone inside, Fire Chief Ben Hazen said. When the homeowner came back outside, the car was on fire. The fire was called in around 2:30 p.m., and when Hazen arrived at the scene, Sgt. Jim Greeley of Waldo County Sheriff's office had attached the burning Buick to his vehicle with a chain and was pulling it away from the house. Greeley just happened to be passing by when he saw the fire.

When Greeley arrived, the car was about 7-feet from the residence, Hazen said. Had the car not been moved, the fire could easily have spread to the house, he said.

The Fire Department put out the car fire within half an hour.
