With the grind of the regular season behind them and the promise of strong finishes in the postseason ahead, high school wrestlers from Belfast, Camden Hills of Rockport, Medomak Valley of Waldoboro, Mount View of Thorndike and Oceanside of Rockland/Thomaston are ready to take their skills to a new level beginning Saturday, Feb. 1 at the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference championships at 9 a.m. at Mount Ararat High School.

The Windjammers are the four-time defending league champions and it appears they, along with the Lions of Belfast in Class B and several Class A squads, especially Skowhegan, could be in the mix for top overall league honors this weekend.

The Medomak Valley Panthers, Oceanside Mariners and Mount View Mustangs have smaller squads and probably will not challenge for team titles Saturday, but certainly have student-athletes capable of challenging for individual crowns.

The KVAC meet will be followed, in consecutive weekends, with the Eastern Class B and state Class B championships, at Belfast and Morse of Bath respectively on Saturday, Feb. 8 and 15, events that will include all of the Midcoast teams.

Teams compete in many dual-meets during the regular season, as well as plenty of in-season tournaments. The local squads' dual-meet records this winter were: Camden Hills 27-5, Belfast 20-5-1, Medomak Valley 14-15 and Mount View 13-13. Oceanside had one win (the team's overall record was unavailable).
