Former Mount View High School standout student-athletes Anna Piotti and Hayleigh Kein were honored for their efforts on the rugby field by the New England Small College Rugby Conference, including Piotti being named its player of the year.

The Polar Bears women's rugby team won their second straight NESCRC championship in the fall and finished with a 9-2 record, advancing to the quarterfinals of the American Collegiate Rugby Association Tournament.

Piotti and Kein were honored by the NESCRC, along with teammates Pamela Zabala, Addison Carvajal, Maura Allen, Kameryn Sanchez, Amanda Montenegro, Emily Athanas-Linden and Paige Pfannenstiel.

A flanker, Piotti also saw action as a lock in scrums and on jumps during lineouts. She led Bowdoin in total tackles, including try-saving tackles this season, scored three tries offensively and assisted on four others.

"Anna is well-deserving of this award," said head coach MaryBeth Mathews. "She's the type of hard-working, unselfish team player who will do whatever is asked of her, and then go 110 percent, all with a smile on her face. Moving from wing to second row, the transition she made and the impact she had on every aspect of the game is outstanding."

Kein played fullback for Bowdoin and due to her overall stellar play on the field, she has been elected as a co-captain for next year's squad. Matthews called Kein "a pleasure to know and to coach."

"In one year's time Hayleigh developed not only into a solid attack force at fullback, but also became the best defensive fullback in the conference," she said. "She saved numerous tries from our opponents throughout the season due to her mental toughness and consistently effective tackling."

Piotti graduated from Mount View in 2011, while Kein graduated in 2010. Both were three-sport athletes, participating in field hockey, basketball and track and field.
