With Valentine's Day not to be celebrated for about another week, runners and walkers still found a way to embrace — make that love — a cold jaunt around a new course during the annual "Luv Me" 5-kilometer road race Saturday morning, Feb. 8 at the Samoset Resort.

The event attracted 61 hardy souls on a sunny, but windy, 18-degree day.

Jason Bigonia, 36, of Walpole finished first over the 3.1-mile course as he crossed in 17 minutes and 28 seconds, or a 5:38 per-mile pace.

Gavin Felch, 16, of Union placed second at 19:35, with a 6:19 mile pace. Bigonia outdistanced the field by by more than two minutes.

The first female finisher was Lauren Jellison, 31, of Camden, who placed sixth overall in 21:31, with a 6:56 mile pace.

The event was another in a series of road races to support Go! Malawi and the at-risk orphan population of Malawi, Africa. Go! Malawi was started by Janet Littlefield, a Union native and Medomak Valley High School graduate. For more information, go online at littlefieldhome.org.
