Carl E. Penney, 79, of Knox passed peacefully with his family by his side Feb. 15, 2014 at Harbor Hill Nursing Home in Belfast.

He was born Nov. 29, 1934 in Knox, a son of the late Norman and Maddalena Penney.

He will always be remembered as a strong, loving, unforgettable man. His kindness, laughter, ability to tell jokes and love for his horses were some of his strongest traits.

Carl served his country in the U.S Navy from 1953 to 1957 on the ship Iowa. From 1958 to 1975 (until the barns burnt) he raised chickens. He worked as a carpenter millwright until he retired. On July 4, 1958 he married the love of his life Beverly (Hall) Penney.

He dedicated more than 25 years to the harness racing community. He could often be found at Bangor racetrack or the fair circuit throughout Maine. With his favorite horse "Maine Attraction," Carl was able to start his breed of standard Maine-bred horses, Penney’s Attraction, Penney’s Pride, and Penney’s Flash, to name a few of that Main Attraction line. Carl deeply respected the drivers that drove his horses and enjoyed working with them.

In addition to his parents, Carl was predeceased by his two sons, Mike and Dana.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years Beverly (Hall) Penney; one brother, Maurice Penney; two sons, David Penney and John Penney; daughter Debbie Penney; 14 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

We will never forget and you will never be forgotten. We love you.

Graveside services will be announced in the spring. Arrangements are under the care of Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast, ME 04915.
