A Belfast man who allegedly skidded off the road, struck two mailboxes and fled the scene did not get very far before police found his vehicle had gone off the road a short distance away from the original accident scene.

Michael H. Reynolds, 37, of Belfast, was charged with leaving the scene of a property damage accident after the crashes, the first of which, according to the Belfast Police Department, occurred at about 5:20 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, on Lincolnville Avenue.

The accident report from Belfast Sgt. John Gibbs stated the driver, who police later identified as Reynolds, was traveling south in a 2010 Ford when he "left the roadway for an unknown reason, destroying two mailboxes." The report noted the road conditions were slippery on that particular evening.

The report then stated the driver fled the scene, but not before the property owner took down the license plate number and reported the incident to police.

A short time later, Gibbs stated in his report that police found the Ford after it had apparently gone off the road while traveling on Back Belmont Road.
