Students at the Nickerson School have been kicking up their heels over the past few weeks, and soon they will have the chance to share their new skills when their families join them on the dance floor this week.

Since Feb. 11, the students have been treated to contra dance lessons with local caller Chrissy Fowler in preparation for a family contra dance that will take place at the school Tuesday night, March 11, from 6 to 7 p.m.

The family dance will give the children a chance to teach their parents and siblings some simple footwork, and will feature live music from the Belfast Bay Fiddlers.

The contra dance residency is sponsored by the Nickerson School Parent-Teacher Group, and matching funds were provided by a combination of grants from Downeast Friends of the Folk Arts, The Country Dance and Song Society, the Belfast Flying Shoes Dance series and a private foundation.
