William Arthur Hammond Jr., 63, of Searsport, passed away peacefully April 6, with his family by his side. He passed away at the VA Maine Healthcare System at Togas following long illness with cancer.

He was born in Bangor at EMMC November 16, 1950, the son of William A. Hammond Sr. and the late Mildred Ladd. He attended the Monroe school system as a young man. William was extremely proud to have served in the Army in Viet Nam. He served as Infantry Scout for Charlie Rangers 75th Infantry Airborne from 1969 through 1972. He was a self-employed contractor in all phases of construction to the present time.

He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Jean (Saucier) Hammond, of Searsport; his sons, William A. Hammond III, of Miami, Fla., Robert E. Hammond of Purvis, Miss. and daughter Cynthia M. (Hammond) Harris of Colorado Springs, Colo.; his grandsons, Robert and Kier; his granddaughters, Chelsea, Jordan and Logan; his great-granddaughter Aveigha, whom he adored; his brother, Charles Hammond; and his sisters, Eleanor Leeman, Christine Kellett, Faye Hammond, Cindy Hammond and Joyce McKeller. In addition, there are surviving aunts and many nieces and nephews.

William enjoyed traveling with his family the most, as well as hunting, fishing and camping. He loved meeting people — he was an avid socializer and making new friends. He loved talking about anything and always had an animated joke to tell that’s what makes him Bill. William will truly be missed by many. It always amazed his family how many lives he touched during his battle with cancer.

A celebration of life service with military honors will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 11, at the Searsport Full Gospel Church at 71 E. Main St., Searsport, Maine 04974.
