Runners and walkers celebrated the day with the most daylight of the year with participation in the "The First" Summer Solstice 5-Kilometer Road Race on Saturday night, June 21.

The event, which attracted 59 participants and a bundle of supporters, was held in perfect running conditions — 63 degrees, slightly overcast and a breeze.

Benjamin Hershelman, 30, of Westminster, Colo., finished first, covering the 3.1-mile course in 17 minutes and 18 seconds. He bested the field by nearly a minute, including runner-up Peter Dowling, 34, of Rockport, who crossed the fast, flat course in 18:15.

The first female finisher was Morgan Petrak, 38, of Unity in 23:24.

A bundle of the competitors also had participated in the Waldoboro Day 5K earlier in the day.

There also was a children's half-mile fun run before the 5K. The participants in that event were: 1, Payson Day, 3:21; 2, Jenni Flynn, 4:06; 3, Noah Keene, 4:20; 4, Patrick Keene, 6:20; and 5, Emma Moreison, 6:33.

The solstice event was the fourth in the 2014 Go! Malawi race series. The start and finish of the race/walk was near the The First's parking lot on 63 Union Street, either near the Rockland Community Building on Limerock Street or on lower Masonic Street.

The non-profit Go! Malawi continues to raise funds for their education program, which supports orphans and other vulnerable children in rural Malawi, Africa. Primarily the program provides scholarships for students to go to school in Malawi and Maine.

This race was in conjunction with the annual Summer Solstice Street Festival on Main Street in Rockland.

The annual 5K race series is organized by local volunteers from Team Go! Malawi. This team consists of local walkers and runners who share a common vision: “To Run With a Purpose, For a Purpose.”

They challenge themselves to be physically fit and to make a positive global change supporting Go! Malawi! They are looking for more team members to join them in their destination marathon or half-marathon in the fall.

Those interested in running for the team or joining Team Go! Malawi contact race director Andrew Bonarrigo at masonman321@yahoo.com, or Go! Malawi board members Reade Brower at Reade@freepressonline.com or Janet Littlefield, executive director of Go! Malawi, at Janet@go-malawi.org.
