The Hermon softball team was not the only squad to celebrate on Coffin Field Saturday, June 21 as the Hawks defeated Wells to win the state Class B championship.

The Mount View softball team also had plenty to celebrate as the Mustangs received the Maine Principals' Association Class B East Good Sportsmanship Award banner.

Mount View athletic director Chuck Karter, along with team members Kayla Wilson, Dinah Bilodeau, Krissy Allen, Brittany Dugal and Krysta Porter, were on hand to accept the award.

Coach Chris Downing, who finished his first year guiding the Mustangs, said he was “extremely happy for the girls.”

Downing was on a business trip and had his flight delayed in Pennsylvania and, thus, could not return for the award ceremony.

“They played hard every game [and] they never gave up,” said Downing. “We could be behind by one run, we could be behind by 10 runs, but they always kept the attitude that they were going to come back and make a game out of it. And they did in most cases. Nothing but praise for the young ladies.”

Mount View finished 3-13 this season and 18th among 19 teams in the region.
