John “Jack” P. Helander, 80, of Monroe, died June 22, 2014 at Waldo County General Hospital. Born in Quincy, Mass. on June 19, 1934. He was the son of Gustaf and Catherine (Sharkey) Helander.

Jack married Marjorie Eaton in Hull, Mass. March 24, 1957. Jack served in the Air Force for 22 years; this is what he was most proud of. He retired from the military as a Major before going to work as an air traffic controller for the Federal Aviation Administration. He will be remembered for his dry sense of humor and his daily visits to the local general stores. He loved mowing his lawn.

Jack is survived by his wife Marjorie of 57 years, four children, Deborah Johnson and her husband Mark of Plymouth, Mass., John R. Helander and his wife Beth of Richmond, Vt., Greg A. Helander of Monroe, and Christopher C. Helander and his wife Samantha of Searsmont; and five grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents.

A graveside service will be held July 10, 2014 at 2 p.m. at the Maine Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta. Arrangements are under the care of Young Funeral Home, 31 W.. Main St., Searsport.
