River Arts on Route 1 invites artists to submit work for its upcoming “Faces and Figures” exhibition. Work can be dropped off anytime during gallery hours up until 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4. The opening reception is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 10, from 5 to 7 p.m. The juried exhibition will hang until Nov. 6.

Sought are submissions of figurative art in any media, depicting form or faces of humans or (other) animals. Sculpture and fine crafts are welcome. Artists can enter up to three works, and all work entered must be for sale. Wall-hung work size maximum is 60 inches in height, 42 inches in width; for safety reasons Plexiglas or other non-glass option should be used for work over 34 inches, excluding pastels. Entry forms are available online and at River Arts.

Juror Ed McCartan is a painter with a studio in the Fort Andross Mill complex in Brunswick. His work is experimental in nature, utilizing a variety of styles and media in both an abstract and realist manner. He holds an MFA in Painting from SUNY, Albany, as well as degrees in art education, theology and philosophy. McCartan has taught on all levels of education, most recently at the Emma Willard School in Troy, N.Y., and Russell Sage College, also in Troy. His specialty has been painting and art history.  He currently teaches classes at Midcoast Senior College in Brunswick. McCartan's work hangs in the permanent collections of several museums and in corporate and private collections nationally and internationally. For more information, visit emccartan.com.

River Arts holds 10 themed, open, juried exhibitions per year, with some of Maine’s most prominent art community members as jurors. More than 600 different Maine artists have exhibited in these shows. The gallery program creates opportunity for artists to have their work selected, participate in the gallery process and sell their work. More than 7,000 people visited the gallery and participated in events and workshops last year.
