A Belmont man is facing a gross sexual assault charge after allegedly abusing a young girl.
According to a press release from the Waldo County Sheriff's Office, Detective Merl Reed received information Sept. 30 that Adam Cross, 44, was acting inappropriately with an 11-year-old girl. Reed interviewed the victim, who is not related to Cross, and was told about the alleged sexual abuse.
Cross was arrested and charged with gross sexual assault Class A. He was taken to Two Bridges Regional Jail where he is being held on a $10,000 cash or $50,000 surety bail.
Cross was previously convicted on multiple counts of gross sexual assault in 1998. According to the Maine Sex Offender Registry, Cross was convicted on four counts of gross sexual assault and is listed as a lifetime registrant.
