River Arts invites the public to the opening of its newest exhibition “Abstract” Friday, May 29, from 5 to 7 p.m. The show features 88 works by Maine artists in a wide variety of media, including sculpture and fine crafts. The exhibition will hang until June 25. In addition, the West Gallery will be featuring the artwork of River Arts instructors Deb Arter, Kris Engman, Hannah Ineson, Sandi Cirillo, Joyce Steel, Erica Qualey, Roberta Goschke and Nate Willever.

The exhibition was juried by Dozier Bell, who studied art with Neil Welliver in the University of Pennsylvania MFA program and at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Since her first solo show in 1987, she has appeared in 30 solo and two-person exhibits in New York City and across the country. She is the recipient of several awards, and her work is included in the collections of most Maine museums, as well as museums and corporate collections nationwide. A selection of her drawings from the Bates Museum is included in the current show at the Portland Museum of Art, “Director’s Cut: Selections from the Maine Art Museum Trail.”

Midcoast artists with work in the show include David Estey of Belfast; Gigi Aea of Camden; Elaine Niemi of Friendship; Jack Kennedy and Petrea Noyes of Lincolnville Center; Jeanette Phillipps of Rockland; Victoria Pittman and Carmella Yager of Tenants Harbor; April White of Union; Marie Bickford of West Rockport; Carl Solberg of Waldoboro; Joyce Steel and Diane Walsh of Waldoboro; Jay Sawyer of Warren; and Jeffrey Jelenfy and Karen Jelenfy of Washington.
