Lupine Cottage, a cooperative of 65 Maine artisans and craftspeople, announced it will donate 5 percent of profits from its online sales in 2015 to the Cancer Support Center of Maine, which provides free services to cancer patients, survivors, and people at risk.

As part of its support for the nonprofit, Lupine Cottage has established an online auction, running now through June 25 at winningcause.org/thecancersupportcenterofmaine. Some of the cooperative's members have donated pieces of their work to be auctioned online. All proceeds will go to the Cancer Support Center of Maine.

In addition, Lupine Cottage will host an event Saturday, June 27, from noon to 7 p.m., to showcase members' work and introduce visitors to representatives of the Cancer Support Center. Cooperative members will be grilling food from 12 to 1:30 p.m., giving demonstrations, displaying their work, and serving wine and cheese later in the day, with live music provided by Scot Cannon of Belfast.

Owner Margaret Masessa of Montville said she and Lupine Cottage artisans decided they wanted to get more formally involved with a local nonprofit this year. For the last two years, they've planted a “three sisters” garden outside, growing corn, pole beans and butternut squash, and donated the produce — including 80 pounds of squash in 2014 — to the Belfast Soup Kitchen. That project continues; the garden is planted now for its third year.

“We wanted to start off 2015 by giving back to a nonprofit that's trying to make a difference in the lives of Maine people,” Masessa said. “Cancer has touched everyone's lives, and many of our customers and crafters have had firsthand experience with this deadly disease. So we decided that for the 2015 calendar year, we'd support the Cancer Support Center of Maine with a percentage of profits from online sales. It's a great cause!”
