From a frog pond with a walking bridge to huge hypertufa mushrooms standing guard over perennials, this summer’s Belfast Garden Club Open Garden Days have something for everyone.

This year also kicks off a new addition – three gardens feature open houses and an open studio. Open Garden Days run Fridays from June 19 to Aug.  21.

Included in the open houses is the Hill property in Belfast. Stroll through the terraced shade garden and patio surrounded by ornamental trees, then step inside the multi-level home for expansive views of Belfast Harbor.

Also on the tour are the Cartwright and Gould gardens in Lincolnville. This two-for-one Open Garden Day sites feature Cartwright’s holistic fruit and vegetable gardens and apple orchard on one side of Townhouse Road while on the other side is Gould’s Katahdin sheep farm, rich with flowerbeds that show off her skill as a Master Gardener.

Don’t miss the McLeod Garden in Belfast, with its lush English country garden and Obadiah Buell granite and beach stone sculptures. At the Kriel Garden in Belfast, see gardens that were designed for the view from the house. Visitors are invited inside to look out the windows to see what the Kriels see every day.

Visit the Gaines garden in Belfast where there’s an open garden, open house and open studio. All three buildings share a stonework theme, from the home with its mammoth stone fireplace to the post-and-beam stone house now used as a studio.

The first garden on the tour is the Spencer-Smith Garden in Belfast, bursting with bird habitat and color, a mowed path for visitors, vegetable beds rimmed with violets, and much more.

Next is Skyscraper Hill Farm in Brooks, with gardens covering two acres including a medicinal garden and ancestor garden, as well as 8,000 organic Christmas trees and an outhouse with a stained glass window.

There’s also the Demeter Garden in Morrill that begins at the long drive planted with daylilies and hostas and accented by sculptures made from metal odds and ends.

Each garden has been chosen for its unique qualities. Gardeners will get new ideas and inspiration. Those who simply wish to stroll in beautiful spots to take advantage of Maine’s short summer will enjoy the sights and scents.

The gardens will be open rain or shine. A $5 donation is requested at each. For a savings of $10 for all eight Open Garden Days, buy a strip of eight tickets for $30 at Left Bank Books in Belfast. Tickets are also available at each garden.

Donations help Belfast Garden Club maintain 12 public gardens in Belfast. For more information, visit belfastgardenclub.org or call Martha Laitin at 948-2815.
