Since 1988, the Penobscot Bay Carvers and Artists Association has hosted the Maine Coast Carving and Art Competition and Show. Carvers, artists and photographers are coming from all over New England, and sometimes beyond, the Belfast Boathouse, at the foot of Commercial Street, Saturday and Sunday, July 11 and 12.

Hours for the show are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.

For those interested in entering the competition with carvings, art or photography, entries must be made Friday, July 10, between noon and 6 p.n.; or Saturday, July 11, from 7 to 9 a.m. All levels of competition are available. Costs for entry are $5 for Youth; $7 for Novice, Intermediate and Open; and $12 for Masters.

All types of carvings are accepted. Artwork and photography must be ready to hang and be of Maine wildlife or coastal Maine scenery. Judging of the entries will take place between 9 and 9:30 a.m. Saturday. If the weather allows, judging of the decoys will take place in the harbor and guests are invited to watch this judging.

Club members will be available to answer any questions, and some members will be on hand, carving on their own pieces on site. The Boathouse is only a short walk from the Arts in the Park grounds. For more information, call 338-5309 or 789-5363.
