The Unitarian Universalist Church of Belfast is proud to announce that Karen Nelson, an accompanist since 2009, will assume the role of music director, replacing Lila Nation.

Nelson holds a Bachelor of Music degree in music education from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She has more than 15 years of experience in both choral and instrumental music instruction from kindergarten level through community college level. She spent a decade in North Carolina where she taught music in schools and colleges; hosted classical music programs on public radio; and served as a church music director.

In addition to serving as our accompanist, she has also hosted WERU’s Maine’s Sunday Best since 2010.

Nelson has no plans for major changes as she steps into her new role. She feels honored to have watched the choir grow and improve during the last six years, and is committed to continuing that trend.

“It is an honor to have been selected as music director. Being part of the choir for the last few years and watching it grow in musical ability and membership has been a great joy," Nelson said during a practice session break. "It will be fun and exciting, as director, to continue on this path.”

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Belfast invites everyone, regardless of race, sexuality, political affiliation, or religion, to attend services. Sunday services are held at 10 a.m., 37 Miller St., Belfast. For more information, contact or call 338-4482.
