Classic Comedies for Midsummer Nights is the theme for July at the Belfast Free Library’s Friday Night Flix film series. All the movies are free and screened at 7 p.m. in the air-conditioned Abbott Room of the library, 106 High St.

The July 24th film is the cult classic “The Big Lebowski” (1998, USA), a crime comedy from Joel and Ethan Cohen. Jeff Bridges stars as The Dude, an unemployed slacker whose passions are bowling, smoking weed and drinking White Russians. The Dude becomes the victim of two thugs in a case of mistaken identity — the trouble is, they are messing with the wrong Dude. The film also features John Goodman, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi, Philip Seymour Hoffman, John Turturro, Sam Elliott … and Flea.

This month’s series will conclude July 31 with Mel Brooks’ “High Anxiety” (1977, USA).
