The John Nowak Duo will perform Saturday, Sept. 12, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Belfast Breeze Inn & Music by the Bay, 192 Northport Ave.

John Nowak grew up in a musical family: his mother was a professional singer; and his father played trumpet in the big bands in the 1930s and ‘40s, later becoming a music educator. John began playing trumpet and singing for audiences at age 7 and has been performing professionally for more than 50 years. He has had the privilege of performing with many fine musicians, mostly in the small jazz combo arena. He has entertained on cruise ships, as well as in Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia and New York.

Before moving to Bangor, Nowak could occasionally be found singing with the Unified Jazz Ensemble in Annapolis, Md. He also has performed on several recordings both as a vocalist and trumpeter. His passion, however, is music from The Great American Song Book and since moving to Maine, he has been performing these tunes with many of the best jazz musicians in the area. He said he feels this era — the 1920s through the ‘40s — produced some of the most beautiful melodies and meaningful lyrics ever written, as popular today as they were when they were originally performed back in the day.

Nowak has released two CDs in recent years, “Once More With Feeling” and "Don't Hold Back." For more information, visit johnnowak.net.

The performance is part of the Saturday Dinner Show series. Doors open at 4 p.m., and the dinner is at 6 p.m. Dinner shows are $25 per person with a set menu, which can be checked out online each week; admission for just the performance is $10. The inn also has a weekly Tuesday Jazz Supper Club, a Sunday Brunch ‘n’ Jazz and other events; for more information, call 505-5231 or visit belfastbreezeinn.com.
