The Twilight of Black and White is the September theme for Belfast Free Library’s Friday Night Flix film series. The month features memorable movies from the tail end of the black and white era of filmmaking. All the screenings are free and take place at 7 p.m. in the Abbott Room of the library, 106 High St.

On Sept. 18, the series will screen “The Last Picture Show” 1971, USA). Adapted from the James McMurtry novel, this stark period piece captures a dying Texas town in 1951 — a place where the post-World War II boom is nowhere to be found. Nonetheless, life goes on as two high school seniors (Jeff Bridges and Timothy Bottoms) come of age and ponder their uncertain future. Meticulously shot in black and white by Peter Bogdanovich, the film was nominated for eight Oscars including Best Picture. It also stars Cloris Leachman, Ben Johnson, Cybil Shepherd and Ellen Burstyn.

Capping this month Sept. 25 will be “The Elephant Man” (1980, USA). For further information, call the library at 338-3884, ext. 10.
