Thousands of Mainers are expected to join in the eighth Great Maine Outdoor Weekend Sept. 25-27 and celebrate fall weather and activities in the state. The event includes over 120 different outdoor activities.

“You don’t want to miss this one,” said planning team member Donna Bissett of Maine Coast Heritage Trust. “We’ve again partnered with National Public Lands Day in the nation’s largest single-day volunteer effort for public lands and a fee-free day in Acadia National Park and other federally managed public lands in Maine. Take advantage of these special days with GMOW events.”

Activities range from classic hiking trips in some of Maine’s most beautiful areas to more unique opportunities like kite flying, full moon celebrations, and trail clean up and work days. Others include a guided kayak tour in Damariscotta, fall education programs for families at Maine Audubon, and a “star party” at the L.L. Bean Discovery Park in Freeport.

Scot Balentine of L.L.Bean said, “The Great Maine Outdoor Weekend is a perfect opportunity to get out and explore Maine’s best recreational resources. Explore new trails, parks, and preserves. Get to know organizations in your community, or travel to a new corner of the state and experience something new.”

Many events include free equipment rental and lessons, and nearly all of the events are family friendly.

More than 15,000 people participated in the February and September GMOW events last year.

“One of the best ways we’re able to measure our growth is through engagement with our participants,” saeid Kristel Hayes, planning team member and founder of Mesh Marketing. “We encourage folks to share their stories and photos with us on social media using #GMOW. It’s … fun to see others out there celebrating — and each photo you share gives you a chance to win one of our great prizes.”

The Great Maine Outdoor Weekend is a project of the Maine Outdoor Coalition, which is a network of partners dedicated to increasing connections to the outdoors for all people in Maine by identifying, promoting, and amplifying opportunities for statewide action and impact.
